Meet Some University Employees

Lisa
When Lisa first came to The University of Chicago, she wasn't certain what she wanted to do with her life, so she sought a job that offered abundant possibilities. The temporary placement pool appealed to her both because of the wide range of jobs it offered and the potential for future long-term work. She accepted a permanent clerical position in the Department of Surgery. That was seven years ago, and she has come a long way since then. Today, Lisa is the Assistant Human Resources Manager for the Department of Medicine, the largest department in the University. Her responsibilities include assisting recently-hired staff in becoming acclimated to the University, Hyde Park, and the city of Chicago. She also coordinates Human Resources and payroll matters for the different Sections that comprise the Department of Medicine and tracks prospective employees through the hiring process.

Lisa has taken advantage of the University's new tuition remission program in her pursuit of a bachelor's degree in Management. While her interest in Management is strong, she appreciates the variety of options the University still offers. "The University offers such a wide range of career options that if I decide to go in a different direction, it's possible. You can really change careers here, either within your current department or by changing fields and departments."

For now, Lisa likes what she's doing in Human Resources. She appreciates the large scope of tasks she takes on in any one day. She enjoys the regular public contact, both with current and prospective employees. She is happy not having to drive downtown everyday. And she looks forward to the possibilities that lay before her.
