Meet Some University Employees

Kim
These days, most University of Chicago students do most of their work on-line, and many of them have Kim to thank for it. Kim is the Assistant Director of Information Technology Acquisition, and as such manages the Networking Services and Information Technologies Department, the Desktop and Personal Computing Section and the Campus Computer Stores.

She is in charge of computer buying, selling and consulting on campus and regularly serves individual students, staff and faculty, as well as entire departments. She must focus on two levels in this capacity: both on the individual and on the University as a whole. She regularly accommodates special requests from individuals, helping them find the perfect package for their needs, and at the same time thinks large, about how to increase the University's buying power so that both the University and individuals can benefit from good prices. She plans strategically to guide the University on a clear path by setting school-wide standards and the direction in which the University should move.

While Kim loves the work she does and feels challenged by it continually, she believes that the principle benefits of her job lay elsewhere. The University provides a truly complete community experience. She has made many close friends with students and staff. She serves as a sexual harassment counselor on campus. She lives in University housing, having found her apartment through University Real Estate Operations. Every morning, she walks her son to the University of Chicago Laboratory School, where he attends using tuition remission. "Everyone knows him. People are always telling me that they saw him on campus somewhere. I know he is safe." She meets him for lunch sometimes, and whenever she has to work late, appreciates being able to run over and get him, then bring him back to her office. Most of all, she appreciates how much her son loves school. "My son has grown up around higher education. It will be hard for him not to end up well-educated, just being exposed to this environment."

Kim feels the same way about herself. She is using tuition remission to further her own education in Economics and plans to pursue her MBA at the Graduate School of Business. "Working here is an investment in my son's education and mine."

Finally, Kim appreciates the sense of purpose she feels by working in an academic institution. "Higher education is a higher ideal. I love working towards that ideal."
