Meet Some University Employees

Dan
Dan is the lead Windows NT Systems Administrator for the Systems and Servers group, a shared resource between the Instructional Technology and Research Computing departments. His duties range from the design and support of PC computing in the USITE campus computing labs to the support of the infrastructure surrounding the digital media production and presentation work done in the InTECH Media Center. He recently finished a huge project, helping design InTECH's new flagship public computing facility in the John Crerar Library, which makes over 100 new computing workstations available to the campus community. Dan is also involved in many campus and department-wide committees that look at issues like the future management plan for administrative computing and the student worker orientation and training curriculum.

Dan has worked at the University in his current position for two years and feels that he has been swept up in a very fast-paced, forward-moving wave of progress. "There is never a lack of intensity here. Each individual project seems to be part of an ongoing movement at the University," he said.

The professional stresses are tempered, Dan feels, by the strong presence of the academic community throughout the entire campus. "Through my interactions with students and colleagues, I've found a very rich intellectual environment, more so than I ever thought I would coming into a technical organization." Dan and his co-workers often attend lectures and colloquia on campus together and always seem to be talking about something academic. "Our discussions range from relatively cutting-edge anthropology to particle physics," Dan says. He feels that he receives enormous support from his supervisors to keep a balance in his life and to pursue academic interests in addition to professional ones. He hopes to take advantage of more professional trainings and University courses in the future.
